How Does FWP Monitor Bat Populations for White-nose Syndrome?
FWP has begun its annual surveillance for Pseudogymnoascus destructans, the fungus that causes white-nose syndrome in bats. This disease has caused devastating declines in bat populations across North America, and it was first detected in Montana in 2021. Since the detection, Montana FWP has begun to see declines in bat populations within the state. Tune in to witness the crucial steps being taken to safeguard our winged night mammals!
Tony Powell began his career with FWP in 2012 as a park ranger in Region 1 (northwest Montana). He served as the regional Fishing Access Site manager for eight years before becoming the recreation manager for the Flathead Valley area that includes Somers Beach State Park. Prior to working for FWP, Tony worked many seasonal jobs with the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, Whitefish Mountain Resort, and as a river guide. Tony has a bachelor of science degree in wildland recreation resource management from the University of Montana. While not at work, he enjoys spending time outdoors with his family and friends.
