Wolves running in snow

Hunt > Wolf Wolf Trapping Resources

While wolf trapping season opens Nov. 27 in some parts of Montana, wolf trapping will remain closed in areas in occupied grizzly bear habitat.

Trapping in these areas, which includes sections of FWP Regions 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, will start Dec. 31 unless opened earlier  due to evidence most bears in these areas have begun hibernation.

FWP staff will continue to monitor grizzly bear activity using collar data and field reports to determine when bears are in denning. Trapping in occupied grizzly bear range will open on a local basis as the majority of bears move into dens or by Dec. 31.

Occupied Grizzly Range Maps

Occupied grizzly bear range is delineated in the FWP Hunt Planner, trapping regulations, and on maps available on the FWP wolf trapping resource page.

Wolf Trapping Season Status Map

Status as of Nov. 27, 2023

Trapping start date varies in areas in or near occupied grizzly bear habitat, shown by the floating trapping start date area on the map. For these areas, the trapping season will start on Dec. 31 unless otherwise determined by FWP due to the evidence the majority of bears in these areas have begun hibernation. Floating start date trapping areas are dependent on the district being open per the harvest quota.
