Pirogue Island State Park

Isolated and shaded by cottonwood trees, this Yellowstone River island offers visitors an excellent spot to view waterfowl, bald eagles, fox squirrels, whitetail and mule deer.

Alerts & Closures

Stage I Fire Restrictions for Custer County in the Miles City Fire Restriction Area.  The following acts are prohibited until further notice:

  1. Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire or campfire,
  2. Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials.

About the Park

Visitors find this isolated, cottonwood-covered Yellowstone River island an excellent spot to view wildlife. You can envision the Corps of Discovery‚Äôs travel along the river, and hunt for moss agates.

The park is a haven for a wide variety of bird species including passerines, belted king fishers, shore birds, waterfowl, bald eagles, and wildlife such as whitetail and mule deer.

There are 2.8 miles of designated hiking trails. During hot weather, when the side channels aren't flowing, visitors can take a nice refreshing tree-shaded walk down the side channels punctuated with wading the remaining pools of water. Take care when crossing side channels. Crossing is not recommended if water is flowing.

Size: 269 acres. Elevation: 2,371 feet.

Channel Crossing

Mid-August to early April is the best time to cross the channel and reach the island.

  • Day use entrance fee with a vehicle: $8
  • Day use entrance fee as a walk-in, bicycle or bus passenger: $4
  • With a Nonresident Entrance Pass: Free


* Montana residents who pay the $9 state parks fee with their annual vehicle registration have no daily entrance fees to state parks. For residents who don't include this in their vehicle registration, non-resident day use fees apply.
