Milltown State Park Overlook Relocation Environmental Assessment Checklist FWP-CEA-POR-R2-25-002

Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks (FWP) is proposing to relocate the Milltown State Park Overlook within Milltown State Park. In 2022, FWP staff met engineers from Terracon Consulting to inspect soil and rock cracks and ground loss adjacent to the Overlook area which seemed to have expanded and accelerated in recent years. After a geologic review and consult it was determined that the area was unsafe and had the potential to sluff off. This led to the closure and fencing off the Milltown State Park Overlook. FWP has developed a twofold plan to address the safety concerns and reopen the Milltown State Park Overlook. This will include relocating the overlook and demolishing and reclaiming the existing overlook area. The proposed project would relocate and reopen the Milltown State Park Overlook providing interpretive insights and recreational amenities to users of Milltown State Park. It would also provide security features to curb public access to geologically unstable areas of the bluff the overlook is locate upon.
