Decision Notice - Elkhorn Creek Flood Mitigation Project
Sep 20, 2024 6:06 PM
Montana Fish, Wildlife, & Parks maintenance crews are planning a flood mitigation project in the Beartooth WMA. A beaver dam on lower Elkhorn Creek (below fish barrier) is causing flood risks to the existing roadway. Water is flowing around the northern side of the dam and onto the road, covering a 50-foot section in 6 inches of water. Beavers have been trapped out and dam has been notched and pulled many times but have always returned for years. A pond leveler will consistently lower the water about 12 inches, drying the immediate shoulder and allow the beavers to continue to live without disturbing human infrastructure.
Based on the environmental review provided in the Draft EA, and, to the greatest extent possible, in accordance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, and policies, FWP determined the proposed action (Alternative 2), will not have significant adverse impacts on the human environment associated with the proposed action and constitutes a reasonable and appropriate strategy to achieve identified objectives. Therefore, preparation of an environmental impact statement or EIS is unnecessary.
FWP hereby adopts the Draft EA as final and approves Alternative 2, the Proposed Action.
