Nov 19, 2024 3:46 PM
This project will replace the washed-out bridge in the same location; however, they will install a longer and taller bridge to minimize future impacts to the stream channel and banks while better protecting the structure from future high flows. During baseflow at this location, Elk River is roughly 12-15’ wide, 8-12” deep, bank slopes are roughly 40-50 degrees, 2-4’ tall, no structures or wetlands nearby, vegetation is mostly made up of willow, some sedges, and grasses.
The applicant is Joel Sather of the United States Forest Service. The project is expected to occur in late August – early September.
PURPOSE AND NEED
The previous bridge on Lobo Mesa Trail #6405 over Elk River at Miller Flats trailhead washed out in 2017. Since that time trail users have been utilizing a ford across Elk River to access Lobo Mesa Trail #6405.
