Draft Environmental Assessment Eureka Reservoir Fishing Access Site Improvement Project FWP-CEA-POR-R4-24-014

Apr 26, 2024 4:39 PM

Eureka Reservoir Fishing Access Site (FAS) is a popular Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) site just north of Choteau, Montana.  Eureka Reservoir FAS is comprised of private land leased from the Teton County Coop Company and is used for motorized and non-motorized boat access to Eureka Reservoir, camping, fishing, and other forms of water-based recreation.  The FAS allows overnight camping year-round.  Currently, camping primarily occurs along the shoreline in areas that are not graveled or defined.  The FAS has experienced a high degree of vegetation compaction and erosion along the shoreline due to the years of dispersed camping. Peak use for the FAS is typically occurs in July.

FWP is proposing to develop 7 graveled, hardened camping spaces at Eureka Reservoir FAS that are set back from the shoreline.  FWP proposes to install two-day use group shelters and establish a small day use parking area.  The proposal has been supported by the private landowner (lessor) to improve the condition of the FAS.
