Buffalo Creek Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout Conservation Project EA Decision Notice

Apr 13, 2022 3:37 PM

Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks issued an environmental assessment and decision notice this week that calls for the Buffalo Creek Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout Conservation Project to proceed.

The environmental assessment was completed by FWP and the U.S. Forest Service.

The project calls for biologists to remove non-native rainbow trout from the Buffalo Creek drainage, which crosses the border between Yellowstone National Park and the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness west of Cooke City, MT.

The rainbow trout are the source of hybridization of Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout in the Slough Creek and Lamar River drainages in the park, one of the few remaining strong holds for the native fish.

Buffalo Creek later would be restocked with native Yellowstone cutthroat trout.
