Draft Environmental Assessment for the Kootenai Forestlands Phase II Conservation Easement
Jun 29, 2021 12:00 AM
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) seeks public comment on a proposal to purchase a conservation easement to protect approximately 27,289 acres of highly productive timberland and important fisheries and wildlife habitat in northwestern Montana to the east and south of Libby. The property is owned by the Stimson Lumber Company, one of the oldest continuously operating integrated wood products companies in the United States with roots dating back to the 1850s. The proposed conservation easement, to be held by FWP, would allow Stimson to retain ownership of these timberlands, preclude development, protect important wildlife habitat and key landscape connectivity, and provide permanent public access and associated recreational opportunities.
