York’s Islands Fishing Access Site reopened

Mar 20, 2025 3:23 PM

Closures still in place at other sites due to significant flooding damage

TOWNSEND – York’s Islands Fishing Access Site along the Missouri River near Townsend has reopened.

The site was closed in February after an ice jam on a section of the river caused ice and water to flood the site’s boat ramp, campground and other areas. Conditions have since improved, allowing public access to resume.

Site closures are still in effect for Ennis and Valley Garden fishing access sites on the Madison River. Flooding has caused significant damage to roads and other infrastructure at Ennis Fishing Access Site. Damage to Valley Garden Fishing Access Site is still being evaluated. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks maintenance staff are making plans for extensive repairs to restore safe public access, and these sites will be reopened as soon as conditions allow.

Site closures may apply at other sites around the state, depending on weather and river flows. Current restrictions and closures of FWP-managed lands and waterbodies can be found here.

Recreationists are encouraged to use caution when visiting rivers because of unseen hazards, as well as flow and ice conditions that can change suddenly. For more information about river recreation safety, click here
