Apprentice hunter program now includes trapping

Would-be trappers in Montana now have more options to take to the field under a revision to the familiar apprentice hunter program. In April, Gov. Greg Gianforte signed House Bill 96 into law, amending the apprentice hunter statute to a more general apprentice program that includes trapping.
Now, individuals 10 years and older can obtain an apprentice trapping certificate, allowing them to purchase a trapping license and trap with a qualified mentor for up to two license years. After two license years as an apprentice, individuals are required to pass a Trapper Education class to continue purchasing trapping licenses.
Trapping mentors must be 21 years or older, have passed a Trapper Education course and hold a current trapping license. Mentors must accompany and supervise apprentice trappers within sight and direct voice contact at all times while afield. Mentors must also carry the required mentor form in the field.
Individuals can purchase trapping licenses online or at a license provider location.
