Take Montana’s new Bull Trout Identification Test
Montana’s native bull trout, a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act, are a prized catch for anglers, but their protected status demands careful identification and strict adherence to fishing regulations. To support the limited fishing opportunity in northwest Montana and protect this ecologically vital fish, FWP has introduced a voluntary Bull Trout Identification Test to help anglers confidently distinguish bull trout from other species like brook trout.
Why does this matter? In Montana, intentional fishing for bull trout is tightly regulated, allowed only in specific waters like the South Fork Flathead River (catch-and-release, July 1–31) and Hungry Horse Reservoir (one fish per license year, May to August 15). Anglers must carry a Bull Trout Catch Card, available free from FWP’s Kalispell office or the Spotted Bear Ranger Station. Misidentification can lead to avoidable harm to bull trout, which is why it’s crucial to properly identify them.
The voluntary test, accessible online through FWP’s website, educates anglers on key identification markers -- such as the absence of black spots on the dorsal fin -- and reinforces regulations to reduce handling stress on bull trout, especially amid declining spawning nest (redd) counts in areas like the South Fork Flathead River. By taking the test, anglers can sharpen their skills, ensure compliance, and help protect this iconic species while enjoying Montana’s world-class fisheries.
