Chief Plenty Coups State Park to celebrate Day of Honor Aug. 31

BILLINGS – Chief Plenty Coups State Park will hold the 29^th annual Day of Honor celebration on Saturday, Aug. 31. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Endurance of the People.” The event is free and open to the public.

Day of Honor is held every year in late summer to commemorate Chief Plenty Coups of the Apsáalooke or Crow tribe. Chief Plenty Coups is considered the last traditional chief of the Apsáalooke tribe and his bravery, leadership and vision helped bridge the gap between two cultures.

The event will begin with a fun run in the state park sponsored by Aluutaalaahu Many Arrows Community Development Corporation, Crow Tribal Health and Friends of Chief Plenty Coups State Park.  Registration for the run begins at 7 a.m.

A free barbeque lunch will be served at 1 p.m. and will include brisket, corn, beans and frybread. Festivities following lunch will include performances by a variety of artists, drummers, dancers, and speakers. Vendors and local artists will have various products for sale. Activities will be held in the lower area of the park. Visitors are encouraged to bring camp chairs or picnic blankets, as seating is limited.

Chief Plenty Coups State Park is located at 1 Edgar Road in Pryor, 40 minutes south of Billings. The day-use park preserves the log home, sacred spring, and farmstead of Chief Plenty Coups and is also a National Historic Landmark.
