“Dog Days” at First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park

GREAT FALLS - Although it may seem too early in the spring to be thinking about the dog days of summer, it’s not too early to be thinking about attending the upcoming “Dog Days” program at First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park near Ulm. In this case, the term “Dog Days” does not refer to the hot, slow days of summer, but instead is a unique way to spend time with your furry pal on a ranger-guided hike in the park on April 23 from 1 – 2:30 p.m.
Before horses arrived on the Great Plains, dogs played a critical role in the mobility and success of plains people, and this was also the time period when the buffalo jump was most commonly used.
Canine and human participants will be trained in B. A. R. K. ranger principals, take a guided hike through the park, and receive a doggie gift bag donated by PetCo, along with their official “BARK Ranger” bandana. As an official BARK Ranger, you will be equipped with the skills and information to be a safe and responsible dog owner on our public lands.
B.A.R.K. stands for:
- Bag your pet’s waste
- Always leash your pet
- Respect wildlife
- Know where you can go
Pre-registration is required, and participation is limited to 10 hikers, each with one dog. This hike is weather dependent and may be cancelled due to inclement weather. Cost for the program is $4 per person. Dogs must be on leash, up to date on vaccinations, and friendly with other dogs and humans.
