KALISPELL – Lone Pine State Park in Kalispell is hosting several family friendly educational programs and events in July. Registration is required for all programs. Please call the visitor center at (406) 722-2706 Ext. 0 to register. Costs vary by program.

Summer Speaker Series: Fish of the Flathead with Jim Vashro
Friday, July 1, 6-7 p.m.
Learn about the Flathead’s unique fishery and its history. Presentation will touch on fish biology, how fish are adapted to current conditions and how that will help or hurt species moving into the future. Jim Vashro retired after 30 years as the FWP regional fisheries manager in northwest Montana. Jim continues to promote fish and their habitat, teach fishing classes and explore the places fish live with fishing rod in hand.

Morning Yoga
Saturday, July 2, 8-9:15 a.m.
Enjoy a beginner Vinyasa yoga flow class. This 45-minute yoga class will take place as the sun is rising, bring layers and a warm drink as the morning is chilly. Summer Speaker Series: Birds Rock! Montana Wild Wings
Friday, July 8, 6-7 p.m.
Beth Watne from Montana Wild Wings will present with live raptors. Beth will talk about each of the birds’ special features, habitat, where they nest, and what they eat. Lichen Identification Hike
Sunday, July 10, 1-2:30 p.m.

Workday Wednesdays
Wednesday, July 13 and 27, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Help maintain the integrity and habitat of Lone Pine by joining in trail work including pulling noxious weeds, trail maintenance, and trail building. Summer Speaker Series: Forest Management with Holly McKenzie
Friday, July 15, 6-8:30 p.m.
Learn about forest management from Holly McKenzie, a forester with the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation. After the presentation, there will be a hike around Lone Pine to look at the mistletoe areas where salvage work and thinning will take place between September and November of this fall. Learning Bird Songs with Denny Olson
Saturday, July 16, 8-11 a.m.
Flathead Audubon Conservation Educator Denny Olson will teach how to decipher the songs of birds in the Flathead Valley. Using a video workshop produced by Flathead Audubon, and Denny Olson’s whistled bird imitation skills in the field, this workshop and field trip will be a great jump-start to increasing your bird ID abilities. Atlatl Throwing 101
Wednesday, July 20, 6-7 p.m.
Atlatls are ancient weapons that preceded the bow and arrow in most parts of the world and are one of humankind’s first mechanical inventions. Presenters will give a brief history of the atlatl and then give a demonstration of how it was effectively used for hunting. All participants will get an opportunity to use these hunting weapons and understand how they work. Come explore the relationship of native plants, insects and birds, and find out why this relationship is so important to understanding loss of habitats and biodiversity. Family Trivia in the Park

Test your knowledge of Lone Pine at the first trivia night of the year. The questions will focus on the history of Lone Pine, plant ecology, and animal ecology. We will be going through four rounds of questions to share our knowledge or learn new facts. All ages are welcome and feel free to bring snacks and drinks. Take a Likin’ to Lichen Table Talk

Learn about lichen. Table Talks are designed for visitors to chat, ask questions, and learn something new while out hiking in the park. Touch and feel different types of lichen, learn the difference between various lichens and discover why it is so special to have at Lone Pine. We will be stationed at the Lone Pine trailhead, so feel free to stop by.
