Recreating in Mountain Lion Country

In mountain lion country, almost anywhere in Montana with deer or elk, there's no way to completely guarantee safety from a mountain lion attack. However, we can significantly reduce the chance of a lion incident by becoming knowledgeable of lion habits and behavior.

  • Do Not Hike Alone—Go in groups, with adults supervising children.
  • Keep Children Close to You—Observations of captured wild mountain lions reveal that the animals seem especially drawn to children. Keep children within your sight at all times.
  • Do not let pets run unleased.
  • Minimize your recreation during dawn and dusk.
  • Carry a deterrent device (bear pepper spray)—Know how to use it and keep it within easy reach. [Learn more]
  • Know how to behave if you encounter a mountain lion—Knowing what to do if you do encounter a mountain lion can reduce the potential for a conflict. [Learn more]
