Welcome to the Montana Snowmobile Program! In 1973, the Montana Legislature, with support from the Montana Snowmobile Association, passed laws that collected fees for registration of snowmobiles used on public lands, and set aside a percentage of the Distributor's Gasoline License Tax. These funds are used to support snowmobile trail grooming, the purchase and repair of grooming-related equipment, safety education, public outreach, and law enforcement. These funds also provide for technical assistance to snowmobile clubs, the Montana Snowmobile Association, and other state and federal agencies.
The Montana Snowmobile Program is administered by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP), but the expenditure of snowmobile funds is truly a team effort involving both private and public sectors. A Snowmobile Program Advisory Committee meets no less than annually to recommend to FWP the use of all snowmobile funds. This committee includes private citizens, public land managers and program administrators. The majority of groomed snowmobile trails in Montana are located on lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service. FWP has developed an excellent working relationship with the National Forests and 32 Ranger Districts within Montana. The project sponsor, the pertinent ranger district, and FWP must all sign a Challenge Cost Share Agreement before funding can be approved for trails on federal lands. This agreement ensures that all federal and state laws and requirements are satisfied.
The deadline for the Snowmobile Program grant application has passed. It was May 1, 2009.
The deadline to mail the Snowmobile Program environmental review package has also passed. The package needed to be postmarked no later than July 1, 2009.
