Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) is proposing a westslope cutthroat trout (WCT) conservation effort in Leverich Creek, a tributary to Bozeman Creek near Bozeman, Montana. The native WCT population in Leverich Creek is currently threatened by competition from introduced non-native brook trout. FWP is proposing to remove brook trout from about 1.4 miles of stream using electrofishing and trapping. The use of fish toxicants is not being proposed. A fish migration barrier would also be installed to prevent reinvasion by brook trout once they are removed. WCT only occupy 7 streams and < 5% of their historic habitat in the Gallatin River drainage. The proposed action would involve contracting with professional fishery consultants to conduct gill netting over a three-week period beginning in late August or early September 2008. Information obtained from the proposed action would aid in understanding the status and characteristics of the lake trout population, and the potential impacts of lake trout on the aquatic ecosystem in Swan Lake, and will help to determine feasibility and effectiveness of alternatives for managing the lake trout population (e.g., suppression of the population). All lake trout sampled during the project will be culled; those that are salvageable and of suitable size for consumption will be field-dressed and donated to food banks or other facilities. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) proposes removal of the SH Dam to restore migration of native warm-water fish species that live in the Yellowstone River and its tributaries, including the pallid sturgeon, and species of special concern, such as the blue sucker, sturgeon chub, paddlefish and sauger. The SH Dam is located approximately 45 miles southwest of Miles City, MT in the southwest ¼ of Section 16, Township 2 North, Range 45 East (P.M.M.).

The Future Fisheries Improvement Program is proposing to provide partial funding to a floodplain and riparian restoration project located on a reach of Dunham Creek, a tributary to Monture Creek within the Blackfoot River drainage. The intent of the project is to restore the riparian vegetative community and enhance habitat for westslope cutthroat trout and bull trout. The project site is located approximately 9 miles northwest of the community of Ovando in Powell County

The intent of the project is to enhance spawning, rearing and over-winter habitat for salmonids and increase recruitment of fish to the North Fork and main stem Blackfoot rivers. The proposed project potentially could contribute to the recovery of bull trout, a species listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. This proposed project is located approximately 4.5 miles east of the town of Ovando in Powell County.
