At the end of September 1805, the Corps staggered out of the Rockies into present day Idaho befriending the Nez Perce. Here, they built canoes and paddled downstream on the Clearwater and Columbia Rivers to the Pacific Ocean where they camped for the winter.
After a long wet winter, the Corps returned to the Nez Perce camp to retrieve their horses for the trip back over the Rockies. Clark rejoiced,"those tremendious mountanes behind us—in passing of which we have experienced Cold and hunger of which I shall ever remember."
