Flora and Fauna Along the Trail

Larkspur photo.

There are several ecosystems encountered along these trails giving you the chance to see many different kinds of animals. There are great birding opportunities and the chance to see over 200 different species of wildflowers found in the park. The lower trails near the campground and river provide a great chance to encounter mule deer as well as riparian birds like the osprey and white pelicans, and field songbirds such as the western meadowlark and Bullock’s oriole. Prickly pear and other arid climate flowers dominate these lower trails. The East Side Trail system goes through the area of the park frequented by black bears so take special precautions. The East Side Trail also travels some of the park’s best elk and blue grouse habitat. The Nature Loop features one of the dampest areas in the park with great flower viewing for fairy bells, false Solomon’s seal, and fireweed (later in the season). The Cave Gulch Trail offers a variety of montane and high plains flowering plants. A lucky hiker may even encounter a green gentian, which blooms only once after a life of 20-60 years. The Cave Gulch Trail also offers the best viewing chances for the park’s raptors including an occasional peregrine falcon.
