Fish, Wildlife & Parks, Region One, has written a draft environmental assessment (EA) for the proposed Hay Creek Land Acquisition of 53 acres located near the mouth of Hay Creek (T34N, R21W, S2 & 3) in Flathead County. The Region would like to secure this habitat for long-term protection of westslope cutthroat trout and bull trout. The parcel adjoins Forest Service and DNRC lands and is used by elk, moose, grizzly and black bears, in addition to many other species of wildlife.
The draft EA is out for a 3-week public review through October 15, 2008. A copy of the draft is attached for your review. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) proposes the fee title purchase of approximately 165 acres of important wildlife habitat along the Yellowstone River. The property is located on the west side of the Yellowstone River and on Wolf Island and is approximately 3 miles northeast of Savage and adjacent to Elk Island Wildlife Management Area (WMA). ). The majority of the property consists of native Yellowstone River riparian/cropland habitat complex. The property is currently operated as a portion of a private ranch; which the current landowners are interested in selling. This acquisition would provide for the protection of wildlife habitat, ensure public access to the Yellowstone River and river islands, and provide a location for a Fishing Access Site (FAS). Fish, Wildlife & Parks, Region One, has written a draft environmental assessment (EA) for the Foy's Bend Fee Title Land Purchase project. The proposed land acquisition consists of approximately 235 acres located just below the transition zone between the upper braided and the lower meandering sections of the Flathead River (T28N, R21W, S26, 27, 34, & 35) in Flathead County. This project will protect 3.4 km of riverbank and will greatly help maintain the habitat integrity of this portion of the Flathead River system where the Stillwater and upper Flathead merge and transition in the meandering lower Flathead River system. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP), Region One, has completed an environmental assessment (EA) for the purpose of establishing an additional campground host site at Logan State Park, providing full hookups and a gravel parking surface for summer campground staff. No comments were received during the public review period; therefore, based on the analysis in the EA, FWP finds Alternative B, to install the volunteer host site, to be the preferred alternative. A copy of the decision notice is attached.
