Montana Fish, Wildlife, & Parks (FWP), Region 1, has written a draft environmental assessment (EA) for the Pine Grove Pond Fishing Access Site Proposed Addition Acquisition for the purpose of accepting the donation of 5.39 acres of land northeast of Kalispell, Montana, near the Whitefish River and adjacent to the Pine Grove Pond Fishing Access Site (FAS). The proposed addition would access nearly 1,800 feet of river and would allow FWP to provide public access for fishing, wildlife viewing, and picnicking adjacent to the very popular Pine Grove Pond FAS. This addition would also allow access to and from the Whitefish River for canoeing, rafting, and kayaking.

The attached Environmental Assessment (EA) has been prepared for the proposed release of bighorn sheep at either of two identified locations in the Madison mountain range (Indian Creek or Wolf Creek). This project proposes to trap and transplant sheep from occupied sites within the mountain range, or from other source herds, and release them winter of 2013-2014 or thereafter at either of these two sites. The EA provides for subsequent transplants if necessary. Both release locations were once occupied bighorn habitat in the years before the all-age die-offs the herd experienced during the 1980’s and 1990’s. The benefit and purpose is to improve bighorn population size throughout the Madison mountain range by allowing appropriate habitats to be used. It will also help meet statewide bighorn goals, as per the 2010 Bighorn Conservation Strategy, in creating at least 1 new herd unit. This site should host 100-150 bighorn in the future, and will provide for the benefit and enjoyment of wildlife-watchers, photographers, and hunters. It should also improve the herd genetic potential. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks invites you to comment on the attached proposal. The public comment period will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. October 16, 2013. COMMENT PERIOD EXTENDED TO NOVEMBER 8 AT 5:00 p.m.

MT Fish, Wildlife & Parks (MFWP), Region One, has completed an environmental assessment for the Kootenai Falls Wildlife Management Area (WMA) Riparian Planting proposal for habitat restoration work along the Kootenai River bank within the Kootenai Falls WMA in Lincoln County, Montana (Township 31N, Range 32W). Proposed plantings were intended to restore some of the riparian plant communities impacted by Libby Dam. MFWP would work together with The Kootenai Tribe of Idaho (funding through Bonneville Power Administration) to complete five acres of habitat restoration on the WMA. The draft was out for a 14-day public review through April 8, 2013. One of the three comments received raised significant concerns over potential impacts of the proposal to cultural resources in the general area. Therefore, the decision for this proposal is to select the No Action Alternative and not to continue as proposed. While the riparian planting would result in improved habitats and restore historic conditions, the effect on cultural issues would be uncertain and costly to mitigate. The draft EA together with the decision notice will constitute the final document.
