The enclosed Environmental Assessment (EA) has been prepared as a preliminary comprehensive fisheries enhancement plan for Darlington Creek (aka Darlington Ditch) at Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks’ Cobblestone Fishing Access site, south of Three Forks, MT. Improvements to Darlington Ditch would include the augmentation of the ditch to an appropriate channel dimension and slope based upon an analysis and assessment of the ditch’s existing characteristics. Riffles, pools, and runs throughout the reach will be constructed to provide spawning, rearing, and adult trout habitat and maintain efficient sediment transport capabilities. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks invites you to comment on the attached proposal. The public comment period will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. November 22, 2012.

An Environmental Assessment (EA) has been prepared for a land acquisition project involving purchase of 23.76 acres of land adjacent to the Dome Mountain Wildlife Management Area (WMA) at $1200 per acre for a total of $28,512.00. This project proposed to acquire the land as an addition to the Dome Mountain WMA. The parcel is located on Hepburn Mesa, which is heavily used by wintering elk, and is important for alleviating conflicts with livestock producers adjacent to the WMA. The benefit and purpose of this land acquisition is to conserve critical elk habitat and prevent potential development within elk wintering range. Additional benefits will include new recreational and hunting opportunities on this parcel which has previously been closed to public access. The area will be open to public hunting during the archery and general rifle seasons and provides opportunity for elk, deer and upland game birds.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is proposing to purchase approximately 2,992 acres of property for a Wildlife Management Area located about 42 miles northwest of Havre. The property is located along the Milk River and consists primarily of Milk River riparian habitats and associated uplands. The primary purpose of this proposal is to conserve and enhance native areas that provide important habitat for game and nongame species and to provide additional recreational opportunities for the general public. This habitat provides critical winter range for big game species and the Milk River serves as a migratory corridor for many species. Protecting and enhancing the existing habitat is expected to increase use by game animals, including mule deer, elk, white-tailed deer, antelope, pheasants, sharp-tailed grouse, and waterfowl along with a variety of native nongame species of birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals.
