Closure of Cooney State Park
State Parks - Region 5

Friday, May 27, 2011

In conjunction with a request from Carbon County Commissioner John Grewell and Sheriff Tom Rieger, Montana State Parks has closed Clooney State Park in Roberts, MT, effective immediately. Chas Van Genderen, Administrator for MT State Parks, said “Public safety is the #1 priority and key concern for all Montana State Parks.” In addition Doug Habermann, Region Park Manager stated:

·         “Already high reservoir water levels had previously closed most of the Cooney campgrounds. The water level is now higher than it was a week ago and we are starting to have water over our roads and camp pads.”

·         ‘The forecast is for more rain. Under the worst scenario, if the reservoir comes up too high, it will breach the emergency spillway, which will send at least a large amount of water down Rock Creek and at that point, the County Road will become Rock Creek.”

·         “The main access road to Red Lodge Creek Campground has been closed due to an unsafe culvert on Willow Creek. Although there is emergency travel over this section of road, it could be washed out with another significant flood event.”

Roger Semler, Assistant Administrator MT State Parks, remarked at the conditions at Cooney: “Park roads, boat ramps, and campground facilities are currently covered with high water and it is not possible to predict the exact date Cooney will re-open due to potential for increased flooding.”
