Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and Governor Brian Schweitzer announced the winners of the 16th annual Montana State Parks Poster Contest and recognized the winning students during a brief ceremony May 20 in the State Capitol building.
"These young Montanans have artistic talent and equally important to me, a deep sense of the natural resources and beauty that make Montana the special place that it is," said Gov. Schweitzer. The theme for this year’s contest was: "State Parks: Montana Masterpieces."
First place in the Montana State Parks Poster Contest went to Bryce Haugan of Edgerton School in Kalispell. Second place went to Madison Apple of Central School in Whitefish. Third place went to two artists: Tess Whittlesey of Yellowstone National Park and Gardiner Public School and Mariah Gladstone of Helena's Smith School.
Three students received honorable mention: Makayla Schlieman of Smith School in Helena; Kassi Candler of Lolo School in Missoula; and Vanessa Mattfeldt of East Side School in Glasgow. All students received tee shirts screened with their winning art work and the top winners received savings bonds: $150 for first place, $100 for second place, and $50 for each of the two third place winners.
Winning poster entries will be on display in the front lobbies of FWP offices beginning in June.
