Montana State Parks Poster Contest Has A New Look

State Parks

Friday, November 22, 2002

This year fifth graders will be able to take a "virtual" Internet tour of Montana's 42 State Parks at when they participate in FWP's annual Montana State Parks Poster Contest.  The contest is designed to sharpen students' understanding and appreciation of the natural features and resources in State Parks.

"The tour is part of an activity page that helps students visit their favorite parks online so they can select one in particular to illustrate on their poster," said Debbie Cheek, FWP's parks field support specialist who manages the contest.

This year's poster theme is "The State Park I would most like to visit with my family is...."

"We think the virtual tour of the parks on the Internet may be as much fun for parents as it will be for youngsters," said Cheek.

For added convenience, everything related to the contest is available on the Internet this year, including the activity page and virtual tour of the parks, a "gallery" of past winners' posters, the 2003 contest rules and entry form.

The poster contest artwork may use all mediums, such as crayon, ink, or pencil and should be suitable for reproduction.  Judging will take into account: creativity, imagination, theme, originality, design, use and control of the medium.

Prizes will be a $150 savings bond for first place, a $100 savings bond for second place, and a $50 savings bond for third place.  All finalists will receive T-shirts with the winning entry printed on them.  The school submitting the winning poster will receive a free FWP video book for its library.

Students and teachers without access to the Internet may request an information packet from FWP by phone at 406-444-4701 or by writing: FWP, Parks Division, 1420 East 6th Ave., Helena, MT., 59620-0701.

Winning entries will be displayed in the front lobby at the Helena FWP headquarters and all regional FWP headquarters offices around the state.  The winning entry may also be used as a T-shirt print, a model for posters, or any other item the FWP Parks Division selects.

The deadline for poster entries is April 4, 2003.  Winners will be announced on April 10, 2003.
