Montana State Parks News - Region 5

(Ekalaka, MT) – Montana State Parks ( and the Carter County Museum will host Medicine Rocks Day at Medicine Rocks State Park on Sunday, July 28 beginning at 11am. Join us at the park and enjoy a day of presentations on the geology, paleontology, and nature which makes Medicine Rocks so special.

The schedule is as follows:

11:00-11:30 am Geology of the Medicine Rocks with Thomas Holtz, Senior Lecturer,
Vertebrate Paleontology, Department of Geology, University of Maryland

11:30–Noon Paleontology of the Medicine Rocks with Amy Atwater Paleontology Collections Manager - Registrar at Museum of the Rockies

Noon-12:30 pm Nature Walk with Amber VanMeter, Montana State Parks AmeriCorps Member

What: Medicine Rocks Day

Where: Group Use Area, Medicine Rocks State Park, 1141 Hwy. 7, Ekalaka, MT

Medicine Rocks State Park is located 25 miles south of Baker MT and 12 miles north of Ekalaka MT on Montana Highway 7. Weathering of the park’s soft sandstone rock formations provide a unique landscape filled with meaning and serenity. With over 160 formations and over 10,000 inscriptions dating back to Pre-Contact Native Americans, visitors can fuse their enjoyment of unique Great Plains geology with on opportunity to reflect on the marks of those who have done the same over millennia.
