Montana State Parks News - Region 3

(Helena, MT) – Montana State Parks ( announced today:

What: Lewis & Clark passed through the park on August 1 1805, so now we revisit that event 208 years later. “Lewis & Clark around the Caverns” is a program focused on Corps of Discovery’s time in and around the current state park. This was a crucial part of the journey as they were running out of river and realized they would need help to cross the divide.

Where/When: Thursday August 1 at the Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park’s Campground Amphitheater at 8PM.

Who: Presented by Montana State Parks Ranger Tom Forwood, Park staff.

What: Lewis and Clark Caverns presents, “1 North 2 West – Pioneering the Cavern Township,” with local historian Patrick Finnegan. Patrick will explore the pioneering history of the economically and geographically diverse township surrounding Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park.

Where: Education Room of the Main Visitor Center at Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park

When: Friday, August 2 at 8pm

Presenter: Patrick Finnegan has lived most of his life in Montana, and he graduated from Montana State University with a degree in Computer Science. He has been the Treasurer of the Three Forks Area Historical Society since 2003, and provides research services for the patrons of the Headwaters Heritage Museum. Patrick has co-authored a book of poetry and short-stories (Passages) and authored Taylor Made: Gallatin County’s First Census.

What: Our Saturday Naturalist Walk will include a couple “Works of the CCC”.

This will be a short hike featuring the park’s shady Nature Loop and a short section of the East Side Trail beginning and ending with two of the more impressive structures built during the work of the Civilian Coservation Corps at Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park.

When: Saturday August 3, 9:00 AM.

Where: Meet at the Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park’s Main (lower) Visitor Center

All of these programs are free to Montana residents and registered campers. There is a $5 day use fee for all Montana State Parks for non-residents. Contact the park at (406) 287-3541 with any questions.
