Last Week to Buy Elk B License for Region 2; Secure Private Land Permission First

Hunting - Region 2

Tue Oct 22 15:46:31 MDT 2019

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) advises hunters that this is the last week to buy the Region 2 Elk B License (002-00) license, and permission to hunt private land should be secured before purchasing.

The Region 2 Elk B License allows hunters to harvest an antlerless elk only on private lands in many, but not all, Region 2 (western Montana) hunting districts.  In many places, the license allows hunters to harvest elk during the general hunting season, as well as before and/or after the general season in what are referred to as extended “shoulder seasons.” Check the 2019 Montana Deer, Elk and Antelope Hunting Regulations for specifics at fwp.mt.gov.

This B License is available for purchase from any license provider or online at fwp.mt.gov, but only through this Friday, Oct. 25—the day before the general deer and elk rifle season opens.

FWP stresses that this Elk B License is valid for private land, and that hunting regulations, including season dates, and where the license is valid, vary by hunting district.  Last year, 10,257 hunters purchased the Region 2 Elk B License and harvested 1,319 elk.  There were more licenses purchased than private land locations available to hunt.

“Last season, many hunters bought the B License just in case they found a private landowner who might let them hunt,” said Mike Thompson, FWP Region 2 Wildlife Manager.  “This resulted in good elk harvest by those who already knew landowners, but many hunters that had not sought private land permission early in the year did not find places to hunt.”

FWP says that hunters who have not already made arrangements at this point in the year can overload landowners with requests. Some Block Management Areas (BMAs) (which allow free hunter access to private lands) are located in places where the Region 2 Elk B License is valid, but these BMAs can get congested.  Hunters can find BMA regulations online at fwp.mt.gov/hunting/hunterAccess/blockman.

In addition to securing permission early, FWP reminds hunters to follow all landowner rules and requests such as only hunting during the times specifically arranged, leaving gates as you find them and only driving where allowed.
