Archery management hunts for antlerless mule deer continue in Glendive, Ekalaka

Hunting - Region 7

Friday, November 30, 2018

The general hunting season has ended, but management season archery hunts for antlerless mule deer continue in both Glendive and Ekalaka through Feb. 15, 2019. No bucks may be harvested after the close of the general season (Nov. 25, 2018).

The purpose of these hunts is to reduce conflicts with mule deer by reducing deer numbers in and adjacent to urban areas. Glendive has utilized this tool for several seasons, but this is the first year for Ekalaka’s management hunt. Below is some general information about these hunts:

  • Season dates: Both hunts run from the archery opener (Sept. 1, 2018) through Feb. 15, 2019.
  • Valid Licenses: Region 7 Mule Deer B Licenses, and General “A” Deer licenses are valid for antlerless mule deer for both management hunts. Additional antlerless licenses are available that are specific to either the Glendive or Ekalaka Management Hunt Area. These can be purchased through FWP and other license providers. These management hunt licenses are sold first come, first served, up to five per person. Keep in mind that an individual hunter may only possess a maximum of seven deer B licenses statewide in any combination. Hunters must also possess a current Base Hunting License, Conservation License and Bow & Arrow license.
  • Weapons: All participants in the management seasons are limited to archery hunting for antlerless mule deer throughout the designated hunt areas.
  • Hunt Area: For safety, no shooting zones are delineated within the Glendive Management Season boundaries. No shooting zones are identified on maps that are available at Glendive City Hall, Makoshika State Park and the FWP Region 7 office in Miles City. For the Ekalaka Management Season, hunters may only hunt on Approved Lands. Maps are available at Ekalaka Town Hall or at the Miles City FWP office.
  • Permission: If accessing private property in either hunt, hunters are required to obtain permission from the landowner. Hunters can obtain permission for City of Glendive property from Glendive City Hall (406-377-3318). Permission to hunt Makoshika State Park must be obtained from the park office (406-377-6256). For information about the Ekalaka hunt or for a list of approved landowners, contact Ekalaka Town Hall at 406-775-8731, or call the Miles City FWP office at 406-234-0900.
  • All applicable laws and hunting regulations apply.
