Opening weekend in Region 3 draws fewer hunters, higher harvest

Hunting - Region 3

Thursday, October 25, 2018

In Region 3, the general deer and elk season opened on Saturday with fewer hunters venturing out over the weekend in the warm, sunny weather.

Although game is still spread out on summer range, many hunters saw success and most check stations in Region 3 reported higher-than-average harvest, apart from the northern part of the region — Divide, Canyon Ferry, Townsend — where there was lower harvest and fewer hunters.

Weather patterns will most likely continue to affect harvest numbers.

“The extended forecast is currently calling for relatively mild temperatures and little precipitation,” said FWP biologist Dean Waltee. “This could facilitate a relatively slow start to elk harvest.”

Alder checked 413 hunters and 39 game animals, including three antelope. Hunter success was near average at 13 percent, compared to 8 percent last year and a long-term average of 12 percent.

Cameron checked 398 hunters and 46 game animals. The success rate was 14.1 percent for deer and elk; overall success, which includes antelope, was 15.8 percent.

Mill Creek checked a total of 389 hunters and 21 game animals; overall success was 5.3 percent.

Divide checked 412 hunters and 30 game animals, including an antelope and a big horn sheep. The station saw an increase in hunter numbers over the long-term average, although 6 percent lower than last year. Hunter success was 16 percent lower than last year and 12 percent lower than the long-term average.
