Fish, Wildlife and Parks is seeking comments on a draft environmental assessment (EA) proposing to renew a grazing lease on a portion of the Beartooth Wildlife Management Area, south of Cascade.
The proposed 160-acre grazing lease renewal would allow cattle to be used as a management tool to remove residual vegetation, enhancing the availability and palatability of elk and mule deer forage. This portion of the WMA has been successfully grazed by Voegele’s Inc. for 21 years.
The WMA covers 32,318 acres along the western and northern edge of the Big Belt Mountains in west central Montana, in both Cascade and Lewis and Clark counties.
Copies of the draft EA area are available on the FWP website at http://fwp.mt.gov under “Recent Public Notices.” Or contact FWP in Great Falls at (406) 454-5840.
Questions and comments on the EA will be accepted through 5 p.m., March 20, 2014.
