Hunting

Montana's furbearer season for trapping beaver in western districts 1, 2, and 3 opened Nov. 1, as well as seasons for mink, muskrat and otter statewide. Beaver trapping in central and eastern trapping districts 4, 5, 6 and 7 has been open since Sept. 1.

While land trapping seasons throughout Montana won't open until Dec. 1, a swift fox trapping season opens Nov. 1 in a portion of northeastern Montana's district 6. Check the 2013 furbearer regulations for details on all trapping district season dates and closures.

Regulated trapping in Montana is managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks through scientifically based regulations that sustain furbearer populations. FWP and the Fish and Wildlife Commission continually review and refine those regulations to ensure the use of best management practices for trapping activities. Licensed trappers also provide FWP with important information that assists with wildlife management programs across the state.
