Trappers Must Register if they plan to Trap on DNRC or Plum Creek Lands in Northwest Montana

Trappers: special permission is required to trap on DNRC and on Plum Creek Lands in Northwest Montana. For DNRC (school trust lands) trappers must obtain a free license by September 30. For Plum Creek Lands, trappers must identify which lands they wish to trap at the FWP headquarters on North Meridian Road. Here are the details:
DNRC Lands:
A resident conservation license allows trappers access to all legally accessed state school trust lands. Licensed trappers are required to obtain a free special recreational use license from DNRC prior to trapping by September 30. For more information, contact the Northwestern Land Office in Kalispell
Plum Creek Lands:
Trappers submit their name, phone #, ALS #, township, range and section(s) of Plum Creek lands they wish to trap on, in writing to FWP at 490 North Meridian Road in Kalispell (by mail, in person or email). Trappers are limited to 10 sections each per family. For more information, call FWP at 752-5501.
*From Plum Creek’s Land Use Guidelines:
Trapping:
Recreational wolf trapping, as defined by published Montana FWP trapping regulations is allowed.
Regulations and limits will adhere and be as defined by set Montana FWP trapping license regulations.
Wolf trappers must be MFWP “Wolf Trapper Certified”.
Wolf trappers must register at the FWP Regional office on North Meridian Road in Kalispell, with: name, trapping location – (S/T/R) and phone #.
No trapping on active logging and road construction projects (if machinery is in the area, it is closed to trapping).
Land based- Trap setbacks required; 150’ from all open or gated roads and hiking trails. 1,000’ from all residences and trailheads.
**Please note that commercial activity, including trapping and woodcutting is not permitted on Plum Creek land without a Plum Creek “Use Permit”.
