Hunting - Region 2
This news release was archived on Friday, November 16, 2012

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks reminds hunters that elk hunting in Hunting District 270 (East Fork of the Bitterroot) is limited to those that drew a special license or permit for the district. Application deadlines for both have passed and no additional “surplus” licenses or permits are available.

Youth hunters, ages 12-15 (or turning 12 by Jan. 16, 2013), are the only exception. Youth hunters can hunt brow-tined bull or antlerless elk on a general elk license in HD 270.

“The change was made to help prevent a decline in the number of bulls in the East Fork,” Mike Thompson, FWP Region 2 Wildlife Manager, says. “In recent years the number of elk calves surviving their first winter has been low, which forecasts declining bull numbers, so right now we’re being more conservative with harvest.”
