Hunters can buy over the counter and surplus B licenses (antlerless) deer, elk and antelope beginning Aug. 8.
The availability of over the counter licenses is noted in the 2011 deer, elk and antelope regulations by a statement in green lettering under applicable hunting districts saying “Purchase beginning Aug. 8”.
Surplus licenses are those that remain after Montana’s recent special hunting license drawings. The remaining licenses are sold on a first-come first-served basis. A list of available surplus licenses will be posted on the FWP website at fwp.mt.gov beginning Aug. 5.
FWP reminds hunters that the number of pronghorn antelope, deer B, and deer permits in eastern Montana is down due to the severe winter weather last year.
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks offices will open at 8 a.m. on Aug. 8, online sales will begin between 5:30 and 6 a.m. at fwp.mt.gov, and FWP license providers will also have access to the licenses. License providers are identified on the FWP website—go to For Hunters and click on the License and Permits page.
Hunters may hold up to three antelope licenses, one of which may be an either sex license, and seven deer B (antlerless) licenses in any combination.
