Hunting - Region 7

Fri Jun 27 00:00:00 MDT 2008

Hunters interested in participating in game-damage hunting opportunities on private land this year need to register with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks for the game damage hunt roster online.

Prospective hunters have until July 15 to register at Click on "Game Damage Hunt Roster" listed on the home page under the For Hunters column.

The Internet-based registration can be completed on personal computers, at most public libraries, and at any FWP office. A final game damage roster, randomly generated from all the online registrations, will be posted by early August.
To register, hunters will need their ALS number. They will be prompted to enter a preferred hunting district for potential deer, elk, and antelope game damage hunts. Hunting districts with a history of game damage harvests will be highlighted on a drop-down menu. Prospective hunters may choose to participate in all three species lists. Hunters are urged to print the confirmation page after completing the registration process.

Game damage occurs when animals such as elk, deer, and antelope concentrate on private farms and ranches and eat crops and hay. Those who register will also be eligible for special management season hunts called in response to concentrations of big game during seasonal migrations, extreme weather conditions, and other factors.
Hunts could take place anytime from Aug. 15 through Feb. 15, 2009. FWP will contact hunters on the game damage rosters if hunting opportunities arise.
