This news release was archived on Tue Jun 14 00:00:00 MDT 2005

The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission recently set tentative harvest quotas for the 2005-hunting season. The commission will accept comments through June 13, 2005. Send comments to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, Wildlife Division, (attn: DEA quotas & upland game bird quotas), P.O. Box 200701, Helena, MT 59620-0701 or submit electronic comments at fwpwld@mt.gov (include your name and mailing address with your email comments).

Final quotas for deer, elk and upland game birds will be set at the July 7th Commission meeting and final antelope quotas will be set at the August 4th meeting. The only changes recommended in Region 7 are for sage grouse, deer and elk. No changes were recommended for antelope or other upland game birds.

Upland Game Birds

Sage Grouse:

The only proposed change for 2005 upland game bird season is a reduction in the sage grouse bag and possession limit. For 2005, hunters could take two sage grouse per day with a possession limit of four. This change is recommended based on the recently adopted Montana Sage Grouse Plan and the 2005 lek counts that indicated a restrictive harvest option is required.

Big Game

Mule Deer

Region 7 in southeastern Montana received tentative approval for changes in two proposed licenses based on deer survey results and the guidelines within the Mule Deer Management Plan:

007-14: Reduce resident anterless mule deer 2nd B license from 2000 to 100

797-00: Reduce nonresident anterless mule deer B licenses from 3000 to 1500.

Elk

799-00: Increase anterless elk permits from 100-150

799-20: Increase either-sex elk permits from 80-100
