Montana State Parks (stateparks.mt.gov) announced today that the Smith River State Park and River Corridor will be closed between Camp Baker and Eden Bridge due to black bear activity, effective Saturday, July 6.

Over the past few days, there has been black bear activity involving more than one bear, at several boat camps.

Numerous cases have been reported where 1 or more black bears have gotten into food storage coolers and obtained food.

The bears have not shown a fear of humans. There have been no injuries to visitors in the campsites.

The Smith River State Park and River Corridor will be closed until further notice and management resolves the situation.

Individuals with upcoming permits are being contacted by park staff through the Smith River Reservation Line.
