A 20-year-old, Great Falls man was accidentally shot in the hand by his hunting companion last week.
Both men are from Great Falls and were hunting Nov. 23 on private property south of town.
The accident occurred after the shooter, 21, spotted several deer, looked through the scope on his rifle and switched the safety off.
The shooter decided not fire and slung the rifle back onto his shoulder without putting the safety back on.
As the men walked back to their truck, the sling failed, the barrel of the gun hit the ground and the rifle fired. The bullet struck a rock and either bullet or rock fragments flew up and hit the second man in the hand, injuring a finger and thumb on his right hand.
The injured man was taken to Benefis hospital for treatment. No charges were filed and the individuals’ names have not been released.
