Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) is seeking public comment on proposed site improvements at Russell Gates Fishing Access Site (FAS) on the Blackfoot River.
The proposal calls for creating a designated day-use parking area with up to 30 parking spaces, building a new gravel boat ramp, installing a vault latrine, as well as restoring and stabilizing portions of the nearby riverbank.
Chris Lorentz, FWP’s Seeley Lake-based Blackfoot River Manager, explained that the purpose of the site improvement project is to better accommodate recreational use while protecting streamside vegetation.
“The proposed improvements would help the site to better accommodate the recreational pressure from campers, boaters, anglers and others,” Lorentz said. “Existing pioneered parking areas and boat ramps would be reclaimed, and use would be directed to the new, developed parking facility and designated boat ramp.”
The site design aims to provide separate areas for day-use visitors and campers to better accommodate use.
A draft environmental assessment (EA) is available for review and comment. You may view the EA at FWP’s website, fwp.mt.gov, under “Recent Public Notices;” request a copy by mailing FWP, 3201 Spurgin Road, Missoula, MT 59804; phoning (406) 542-5500; or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
The deadline to comment is 5 p.m. on Nov. 30, 2009. Comments may be submitted in writing to Russell Gates EA, Montana FWP, P.O. Box 136, Seeley Lake, MT 59868 or emailed to email@example.com.
