Licenses must be purchased by August 31 for the fall season for black bear.  Hunters may purchase a license at all FWP offices, FWP license provider, or on the Internet using a credit card at fwp.mt.gov, under Hunting, then click on "Obtain a License."

Black bear hunters must have successfully completed the Black Bear Identification Test and must present a certificate of completion when purchasing a black bear license.  The training and test are available on FWP's website at fwp.mt.gov under Education, click on Hunter Education, then click on Programs.  A paper version of the test may be obtained at FWP offices or license providers.

Hunters are urged to check the mountain lion regulations available at all FWP license providers, FWP headquarters, and online at fwp.mt.gov.

Hunters have until August 31 to either apply for one of the special-permit mountain lion hunting districts, or purchase and validate their license for either the fall or winter season. Hunters can apply for special permits at fwp.mt.gov and click on Online Applications under Online Services. Hunters can also apply at regional FWP headquarters. For those who prefer to apply by mail, they too should visit fwp.mt.gov and click Mountain Lion Applications under For Hunters, for a mail-in form.
