Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) is seeking public comment on a proposal to acquire approximately 20 acres of riverfront property along the Clark Fork River in the Alberton Gorge. If acquired, the property would become a part of the Alberton Gorge Recreational Corridor, a seven-mile segment of the Clark Fork River located approximately 30 miles northwest of Missoula.

The parcel under consideration (commonly known as the Stranahan Property) is currently owned by conservation buyer Stranie Ventures, LLC, which purchased the land five years ago.  The company proposes to sell the land to FWP at the original purchase price.

A complex land exchange, completed in 2004, placed 306 acres in the Alberton Gorge into FWP ownership. The proposed acquisition would further consolidate public lands in the Gorge and preserve public access by placing this 20-acre private inholding into FWP ownership. The canyon corridor is important habitat to many fish and wildlife species and is a popular fishing and whitewater recreation area with an annual visitiation of over 25,000 people.

A draft environmental assessment (EA) has been prepared for the proposal.  To request a copy of the EA, contact the FWP Missoula office at (406) 542-5500, email <,> or follow the link under “Recent Public Notices” on FWP’s website:

Public comments must be received no later than 5 p.m. Nov. 28, 2006 and should be directed to:  Lee Bastian by phone at (406) 542-5517; by mail to FWP, 3201 Spurgin Road, Missoula, MT 59804; or by email to <>
