Grizzly Cubs Hit, Killed By Train

Headlines - Region 4

Wed May 31 00:00:00 MDT 2006

Two grizzly cubs of the year were killed May 25 on the Burlington Northern tracks just east of the Continental Divide at Marias Pass on the southern edge of Glacier Park.

A freight train encountered a female bear with her two cubs. The female bear was on one side of the tracks, the cubs on the other.

The cubs attempted to run to their mother and were hit by the locomotive. One cub was a male; the other will have to be identified to sex by DNA samples.

State wildlife officials said the presence of the bears did not involve any kind of rail spill or attractant.
