Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking public comment on a proposed conservation easement in northeastern Montana on 4,489 acres of land associated with the Cowell Ranch, 50 miles south of Malta.

The easement, which ensures the property remains a working ranch, seeks to conserve and improve the grasslands for wildlife and livestock and increase available public hunting access.

The proposed easement lies within Hunting District 622 and borders the Bureau of Land Management Burnt Lodge Wilderness Study Area on the southeast and is within one-half mile of the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge.

The public may review the plan and comment at a public meeting scheduled in Malta at the First State Bank on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. Written comments can be emailed to jelletson@state.mt.us or mailed to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, Attn: Cowell Ranch Conservation Easement, Rural Route 1-4210, Glasgow, MT 59230. The Cowell Ranch Conservation Easement Environmental Assessment and Management plan is available on the FWP web site under "What's New."
