HeadlinesMontana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking comment on proposed new rules on importing bait leeches into the state. The new rules, to go into effect March 10, call for an FWP permit to import bait leeches from sources outside of Montana and for periodic inspections of leech shipments. To receive a permit, the commercial bait dealers, or others wanting to ship leeches into Montana, must also provide information on the source of the bait leeches.
"The new rules call for this information to help ensure leeches imported into the state are not collected from areas known to contain zebra mussels or other organisms that could pose a threat to Montana's fisheries, native wildlife and plants, or to agricultural production," said Karen Zackheim.
Copies of the proposed new rules are available by calling FWP on 406-444-2449 or by accessing the FWP web site at fwp.state.mt.us, under "Notices." Written comments and other input may be mailed to FWP, Attn: Karen Zackheim, P.O. Box 200701, Helena, MT 59620-0701. Email comments may be submitted by clicking the "Comments" box next to the proposed rules under "Notices."
