At its meeting in Hamilton on March 6, the Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission adopted a new rule that establishes a fee and registration system for commercial users of Alberton Gorge, who launch from FWP-administered fishing access sites, on the Clark Fork River west of Missoula.

The registration process, which was tentatively adopted in January pending receipt of public comments, will be initiated this April and extend through March 15, 1999. FWP officials approved the registration process to document the number of commercial users of the gorge during 1998 as well as in prior seasons. FWP estimates that approximately 25-30 past commercial users will register to use Alberton Gorge in 1998.

As part of the proposal, a commercial use fee of 3 percent of an individual commercial users' gross revenue will be assessed. The rule also limits the number of commercial outfitters who will be able to launch from FWP sites to use Alberton Gorge in the future.

Those desiring more information on the new rule are urged to contact Lee Bastian, Fish, Wildlife & Parks' Region 2 parks manager in Missoula, at (406) 542-5500.
