The Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission is now accepting public comments on the annual rules for auction of one bighorn sheep and one moose license in 1998.

To date, the Commission has selected wildlife conservation organizations to auction the licenses each year. The Foundation for North American Wild Sheep (FNAWS) has conducted the annual bighorn sheep license auction since its inception in 1986, while the Montana Chapter of Safari Club International, FNAWS and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation each have conducted the moose license auction since the first license was offered in 1988. Organizations that conduct the auction can retain up to 10 percent of the revenue to cover administrative costs of the auction.

The proposed rules for the 1998 auction licenses are the same as 1997 and allow Commissioners to concurrently consider bids from individuals as well as solicit auction proposals from wildlife conservation organizations.

Public comment on the tentative rules for the 1998 auctions will be accepted by the Commission through May 1, 1997. Comments should be sent to the Wildlife Division, 1420 East Sixth Avenue, PO Box 200701, Helena MT 59620-0701. Final rules will be adopted at the Commission's June 6, 1997, meeting in Helena.
