Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will renew an agricultural lease on the Blackleaf Wildlife Management Area.
Gary Bertellotti, FWP Region 4 supervisor, issued a decision notice March 22. The decision came after a 21-day comment period on an environmental assessment outlining the project. The decision goes to FWP in Helena for final approval.
The 9,000-acre WMA is located along the Rocky Mountain Front about 12 miles west of Bynum in Teton County.
The proposed agricultural lease would allow haying as a management tool to remove residual vegetation, improving the availability and palatability of elk and deer forage on a portion of the WMA. Haying has been used successfully on the WMA in the past.
