Sun River WMA Opens Noon May 15

Fish & Wildlife - Region 4

Wednesday, May 11, 2011

The Sun River Wildlife Management Area west of Augusta will open noon on May 15.

Thousands of elk that had been stuck on the WMA because of deep snow along the Rocky Mountain Front have largely dispersed. A few hundred still remain, but with warming temperatures in the forecast for the next several days they may leave, too.

Since the late 1990s, the Sun River WMA has opened at noon.

This year, all WMAs open at noon.

Depending on the weather, each year dozens, sometimes hundreds, of people race across the Sun River WMA looking for antlers elk have shed the previous winter.

Because of the growing popularity of shed antler hunting, smaller but equally fervent crowds have focused on other WMAs. With safety concerns in mind, the Fish, Wildlife and Parks commission recently mandated all WMAs open at noon, instead of midnight as in the past.
